Hi, I've been using pine in the coop an discovered hay is much cheaper. Will my girls still be able to scratch at the floor an eat? My Buff Orpington would rather eat from the floor then the feeder. Which do you prefer an why?

Yes they will still scratch and eat, in fact the hay will be one of the things they eat, pine not so much.

We use straw spread around 2" to 3" thick, we then can add to this thickness as needed. When it gets all broken down and looks like compost, we pull it out for the gardens and replace with fresh straw.

I just bought 2 bales of oat/alfalfa for my hens. They love scratching through the hay & eating seeds. As they scratch through, they turn over the old hay & shavings. The run smells clean & I like the soft ground for their feet. I rake the run a couple times a week, and it stays pretty clean. I also put in PDZ.
