Hi -
We recently built a chicken coop and run and have added 11 production red hens to our family. We got them at two weeks old, but now our 14 weeks old. They've been a great joy and we've really enjoyed interacting with them and seeing their personalities. We look forward to when they reach laying age, but right now we've run into a problem twice where one of our chickens has gotten a small cut on her leg, and then she bleeds quite a bit. Right now I'm nursing one that cut her leg yesterday back to health as I think she ended up dehydrated, so I've been feeding her water with a dropper and encouraging her to eat and she seems to be perking up thankfully. Anyway, we love our chickens, and this is a first for our family, but they've been such a joy to have. Down the line we plan to add more, but for now, this works for us. They have a 21x18 chain link run with chain link over the top and dug down into the ground so it'll be 'critter' proof. So far, so good. Their coop is about a foot off of the ground and their coop is 4x8 with external nesting boxes. We call it the, 'Coop de Ville' because it's pretty much only missing a flat screen t.v. and fridge. They've got it made.
Anyway.. just wanted to introduce our chicken fam.... we're in the St. Louis, Missouri area and really just seem to love having chickens.
I'm looking forward to meeting folks who share our enjoyment of chickens.
