The coop building link will help you get some ideas on what you want to build. The important thing is making it bigger than you need it, and having enough ventilation.
There are so many chickens out there that lay so many colors of eggs. It’s impossible to choose a breed!
 
Welcome, welcome!! We are glad you joined us! I'm a newbie too and I'm here to read and learn in order to start my own flock. I can tell you BYC is a great place to find info about all things chicken and the friendly folks here are very happy to share their expertise. It's hard to know where to begin.....so as suggested above....start with articles. First consider your location and weather....my flock will be in Connecticut so I was able to narrow my choices to cold weather breeds. Then decide if you want bantams or large fowl. Then read about breeds and consider things like friendliness. You will be able to figure out what appeals to you and which breeds are best suited for your goals. You are in the right place...so pull up a chair, bring your questions and get to know a few folks....we're so excited you came!! :wee
