I come to you from the Sarasota area in FL! My wife and I are getting ready to start our flock...maybe 4 or 5 birds? We would like a flock that produces eggs but is fun too with a few fancier or breeds for a little flare :-D Growing up, my brother and I raised chickens and were a part of the local 4H for a few years in PA. I have a little previous experience but I'm excited to join this group to get ideas for our upcoming flock and to help when possible as well!

Welcome to BYC - great to have you as a member with us! Unfortunately, i cannot advise on what breed may be suitable for you as i live in Kenya, and apart from some bantams i see posted for sale, we do not have specific chicken breeds for sale. I am very sure other BYC members can point you in the right direction though!

Good luck and welcome once again!

Large Fowls..I love the sex links for the eggs..and the Buff Orpington chicken is a pretty hen, and nice looking rooster for the kids.

There is many breeds to choose. I am into rare breeds that lay a decent amount of eggs.
My biggest seller is Black Copper Marans. Marans lay dark brown eggs. The pic below is Marans.

Marans and Orpingtons are my favorites, but there is so many good breeds on this site. Orpingtons lay a lite tinted eggs. Both breeds are calm, non aggressive breeds, and wise to predators.

This site has a great list of Heritage breeds. http://www.livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/conservation-priority-list#Chickens
Good luck!

Beautiful..both the birds and the eggs!

If you want unusual looking birds: Apenzeller Spitzhauben , Showgirls, Polish, Silkies - don't look at all like your everyday chickens. You can put the breed name in the search box and see what they are like.

Whoa....my Marans (cuckoo, hatchery) didn't get the memo about the color of eggs! I can't even tell theirs from the eggs the Red Sex Links lay! But they are steady, the eggs are of good quality, so I'm thinking that it may be time to re-look into some top notch Marans! Gorgeous eggs!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I can't wait to explore the site some more. I definitely would like to have a few bantams in the flock
