The brooder should be 95 the first week. Then reduce by 5 degrees every week until equal to outside temps. Just watch the chicks after raising the lamp. if they stay clumped together they are too cool. Just lower the lamp a lil and they will adjust there position to their liking. Be sure to only have the lamp covering 1 end of the brooder. that way they can move away to regulate there temp. They should move all over while active. and sleeping together for warmth. But should not be mashed together all the time! if they are , they are too cool. As long as they have room to get away or closer to the light they will be fine!
P.s. sleeping alot and in all kinds of crazy positions is normal. I thought some of mine had narcolepsy! LOL They would be in mid step and just stretch all the way to the ground. standing with head on ground (tri-pod) and sleep! LOL So Funny!!!! 1 Time I thought they all had died! They were in all kinds of strange positions. Legs up, out, sideways...etc All was fine! they just have to figure out the best position to sleep. It took mine bout 2 weeks to figure it out.
Good Luck and God Bless!
