I had a chick hatch yesterday with a protrusion (from its vent?). It was bleeding yesterday and was brighter red. This morning we removed the other chicks (they were pecking the protrusion) and left this one in the incubator. The chick has been sleeping since then (about 1.5 hrs ago). It’s moved around a few times.

I’ve read posts about this but haven’t found a definitive answer about what to do. Any advice?

I’ll add a better picture if the chick moves into a different position.

Edit: Just added a new photo. I can now see that what's protruding is a loop - I can see through the middle of it. The chick is still alive and sits up every once in a while but for the most part it's sleeping.

Hi, and welcome to BYC! :frow

We had a 2-week old silkie chick that had about a 3/4" protrusion. I had to keep her separated.

I bought generic Preparation H and three times a day I would put that on her butt and hold it in for a couple of minutes. It would stay for a minute or two, then ease back out. I gave her probiotics, the powder for their water too.

I did this for a week, and it seemed smaller but still there, so I tried her out in a grow-out pen with her siblings, and they left her alone. She's now 9 months old, laying eggs, and I'd never have known.
