So, my first time broody hens have an 0 for 4 acceptance rate so far. Apparently they like sitting on the eggs, but the babies freak them out. Anyway, I found a little chick today flopping around the nest box. Mama had left it and the eggs behind and fled to a different nest box altogether. I've got the baby at home in my brooder, separated from the other three but within earshot. It's little box is between 95-100. It's got two pecked spots- one by the "ear" that is drying up and doesn't seem deep at all (thank goodness) and one by it's vent where she pulled the top layer of skin and feathers off. It's not still actively bleeding and the organs aren't compromised or anything.
Should I put any sort of medicine on these injuries or just let them dry out first?
Beyond that, I haven't pushed sugar water although I'm sure the baby is plumb wore out. I figured getting warm and sleeping should be the priority for a chick that's a few hours old. Does that sound right?
