Hi all! I'm excited to be a part of this group! Here are my responses to the newbie questions...

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I am soooo green! I got my chicks in early March. I wanted the eggs. I didn't know I'd get so dang attached.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Up until yesterday, I had 6, but my rooster needed better home and a more established flock. I cried all day, much to my surprise. So now I have 5 pullets.

(3) What breeds do you have?

I have one Buff Orpington, one Blue Wyandotte, one Silver Laced Wyandotte, and two Ameraucanas. The rooster was a gorgeous Blue Laced Red Wyandotte.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I love watching their personalities develop. I really had no idea. I sometimes just go sit in the chicken run with them. It clears my head and ensures they're used to me being around them, which makes handling easier when it's necessary. And my Blue Wyandotte likes cuddles, sitting on my shoulders, and pecking at my toes. Also finding their first eggs has been a real joy.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I love bird watching, so I guess raising chickens was inevitable. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so hiking is a big part of my life. I also love love love reading :)

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

Married 27 years, live in the Pacific Northwest for most of that time. My fur babies are my kids. I have a Yorkie, a Morkie (Maltese/Yorkie), and a Chihuahua. The Morkie and Chihuahua are medically needy. I also have a cat with thumbs who likes to play in water. He thinks he's a squirrel and can jump nearly 8 feet vertically in one leap straight up a wall. I am a writer and an editor/proofreader, which means I get paid to read, and I can't believe I get away with that! lol

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :DAre you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I found BYC because every time I googled something about chickens, this site came up. Out of all the advice on the internet, I've found the advice on this site to be the most accurate. It's also the least panic-inducing and makes me feel like I can actually do this!
