Let me start with the basics.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am! Our story is a bit unique (which i'll explain a bit later) but technically, we got our first hens 2 months ago.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

2 hens, 6 chicks.

(3) What breeds do you have?

2 Rhode Island Red hens, 2 Ameraucana chicks, 1 mystery chick, 1 Cuckoo Maran chick, 1 Gold Laced Wyandotte chick, 1 Buff Orpington chick.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Literally everything.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I am a huge animal lover so my life revolves around being a fur/scale/feather mom.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I am happily married to my husband of 2 years. We've been together since 2010 and every day is an adventure. Our daughter Briella was born premature in February but passed away shortly after coming in to this world. Other than our chickens, we have 2 short-haired cats, 2 dalmatians, 1 yellow bellied slider turtle, and multiple saltwater fish. I am a Manager at Best Buy as of 3 years ago, having previously spent the past 13 years as a Manager at several pet retail stores.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I did a general search through google to find BYC and joined asap! Our 7th chick, a cream legbar, had become lethargic one day and I was hard pressed to find anyone for advice on what all I could do for her.

Ok, now for the story.

Our township's ordinance says that we cannot have chickens unless we have 10 or more acres of land. A large group of residents has been actively pursuing an ordinance change and have attended multiple township meetings (they're actually voting tomorrow so EVERYTHING IS CROSSED). After 3 years of trying to convince my husband, he finally agreed to our, currently, illegal operation. There has been a lot of talk about grandfathering residents in who already have chickens, regardless of the final decisions - and so, queue our 2 RIR hens. They're actually borrowed hens 😅. One of my employees has a large flock of chickens and agreed to allow us to foster/borrow/spoil 2 of her hens so that we could be grandfathered in while our chicks, who aren't nearly ready to be in the coop, stay tucked inside to grow. So while we currently are proud owners of 8 chickens, we will be down to 6 once our chicks move outside and the hens return to their actual home.

BTW, I think my husband is more in love with these chickens that I am.

Thank you for having me as a member and I so look forward to picking all of your brains!
