Greetings! After following BYC for months I finally registered. I’m a brand new chicken mama and enthralled with my new hobby and caring for my chicks. They have been my saving grace during COVID isolation and working from home.
As I write this introduction my flock consists of 6 lavender and 6 chocolate Orpingtons. Sadly, I’ve come to the realization that 6 of my lovely ladies are not ladies and I will soon need to say good bye. I’m now thinking that I may not be cut out for this because my heart is breaking. I had a good cry last night.
The chicks are now 11 weeks old and there is no more denying that half of them are roosters.
I’ve become rather invested in my first flock and am enjoying every minute of it. I can sit here for hours and observe their antics and behaviors, which I have been doing while sitting through endless zoom meetings. I have a portable coop and have invested in an electric fence and we move this set-up to different areas of the backyard month to month. My one granddaughter, 8 years old, has also taken a shine to them and she’s a big help! My husband calls us the “chicken whisperers”.
This group has been a lifesaver! and I’m so very grateful for all the wisdom and support that is offered here. I looking forward to now officially becoming a part of the community.

Yes!!
I can’t keep them at my house in town but we have property about 9 miles away. I suggested this to my husband and we’re considering it. Thanks for the link!

Hi, sorry about all the boys. Have you considered keeping a rooster flock? Some people do and find ways of making it work. Do a Search and read up on other's experiences with keeping a flock of all boys...here's one thread to get you started:

Best wishes!
