Hello from MI! My name is Mindie and I am new to owning chickens, well, for the most part. I grew up on a farm where we had horses, cows, occasionally goats, and chickens. I got married in 96 and we couldn't really afford to buy a place where we could have the farm I wanted, so we have slowly over the years, built up to what we have now. We have 2 horses, downsized from 5, 6 cows (1 angus/hereford 4h steer, 1 Sim/Angus w/bull calf, 1 dexter heifer, 1 dexter/zebu heifer, and 1 dexter/zebu cow thats pregnant), a small herd of goats including 2 milking does, and now some chickens! We have 7 children ages 16 months to 13 years. I have homeschooled my kids, but this year they went to a private school. We are going back to home/unschooling when school lets out. As far as my chickens, I have a one footed brahma hen (frostbite) that was given to use when she was 4 months old last fall, and the rest are young yet. In my 2 month old batch I have all pullets, a BO, a dark cornish, 4 white ones (not sure, they are in the brown layer asst from mcmurray), a couple of speckled sussex I think, a silver laced wyandotte, and something else, I can't think right now! LOL! Also 2 blue silkie bantams from that shipment, not sure of sex yet. I bought 4 Cx's about a month ago to see how that goes to raise our own meat. I also bought this week from FFH: 6 what I thought were Araucanas, but only one is, the rest are Ameracaunas, 6 mille fleur d'uccle bantams, and a dozen more Cx's. I plan on canning most of the chicken because we make a lot of soups and pulled chicken tacos. Plus I don't have a big freezer! I am looking forward to gaining a lot of knowledge here!
Oh, we are also looking to move south, maybe TN as soon as DH can find a good job there. He is an engineer and SolidWorks designer, so finding a good place has been difficult from this far away. We have never even thought of moving out of state before, so this is a new journey for us!
