Nipple training baby chicks

I have 16 baby chicks that Im wanting to train to use the water nipples, how old do they have be to be before they can push the silver part in enough to get water from the nipple?

Mine are almost 3 weeks but they've only used the trough type. Would I need to use a gravity nipple 1st then move to the horizontal ones?

I put a horizontal nipple waterer in around 2 - 3 weeks. I leave the chick waterer in also for another week. After a week most or all of the chicks have caught on, so I take the chick waterer out. I usually do this on a day where I can check in on them periodically, to make sure I see all of them use the nipples. I only use horizontal nipples!

To encourage them to peck at it, I put a little peanut butter on the nipples for the first few weeks. Good luck with your bunch!

Day-old chicks can use the vertical-style poultry nipples.

I've used the horizontal style poultry nipples with 6 week olds, but you could probably use them a bit younger.

I taught 4-6 week-olds to use the horizontal nipples by wedging a treat like a mealworm or a sunflower seed into the nipple. When they take the treat they discover that it's wet there.
