Nipple waterers

Does anyone use or know of the gravity feed nipple waterers like the one Henspa uses on their big coups?

Thanks, just thought that the nipple idea was good for sanitation. seems like a good idea on paper but must not work well in reality. And I'm lazy! wanted to get outa dumping junk outa water dishes and all.

Sometimes I get fixated on something and have a hard time letting go

Hi:
I haven't set it up yet, but I'm planning to make my own version of the henspa waterer.
I bought a flat-backed bucket and a bucket water heater.
I didn't by the self-heated bucket.. I'm not sure how those are wired up and I don't want to ruin it by drilling holes in it.
I ordered some nipples from farmtek.

I haven't set it up yet, but I'll post when I do.

I'm not sure if I'm going to set it up on the inside or the outside of the coop. It seems to me that the nipples would be more accessible and easier to learn if they are on the inside, but then the bucket takes up more space, is harder to get to for refilling.

I can't find it now, but there is a fellow out there who built his own henspa-type movable coop with wheels, and he duplicated the henspa bucket as well, and has it mounted on the exterior of the coop. I wish I could find my link to the photos. He may even be on this forum somewhere.. I lose track of where I see these things.

I too have been surprised not to see more evidence of people doing this. I am all for a low-maintenance approach.

Wow, I had forgotten that I had started this thread, was looking in the subscribed folder and tadahhhh!!

Yes I have always wondered why no one here talks about the nipple waterers.( thought maybe that it was the "dont want to have anything to do with anything the commercial guys do" syndrome.) But it really makes sense, especially from a sanitary perspective. That being no dishes full of trash and other undesireable "things" and low maintenance. Thanks Suz

I plan to do this in the future as well. I agree it does make sense from a sanitary angle. I also dunno how much longer I want to be toting five gallon buckets.

I use rabbit water bottles for my younger birds when in the brooders. Has to be filled 2x a day with 20 birds but it is easy to clean. NO spills, NO drownings, NO mess! If possible I won't go back to regular chick waterer's. I however find you have to start chicks on it first time round else they won't learn. Adults though, pick up pretty quick.

I am wanting to use something like that inside coops to help with housekeeping and maximize space. Also want to eventually have water container ouside coop and just have nipple on inside as the henspa coops do. I am going to try a couple of those rabbit bottles as an experiment.

FarmTek has several watering options to choose from. I don't know how their prices compare to others, though.
