My Ameraucana is laying brown eggs. I bought the same 3 chickens from the same place that my friend bought hers. I added a silkie as well. She gets pink blue & brown. I only get brown, im desperate for blue eggs. Can i purchase a hen already laying?

Welcome to BYC.
Sounds like you bought some Easter Eggers which can lay different colors.

One way to for sure get blue eggs is to buy an already laying hen, just becareful about making sure you quarantine any new birds so you don't pick up any diseases.

Sounds like you may have Easter Eggers (which can lay blue, green and brown eggs) vs true Americaunas (why traditional should only lay blue eggs).

What color are her legs? This is not technical at all but my Easter Eggers seem to lay an egg al;ong the same color line as their legs- for instance blue legs = blue eggs, green legs = green eggs, and any other color legs lay brown.

Can you tell me how to find hens already laying? I live in Northwest Indiana and I drove downtown Chicago to buy these babies just so I could get the colors that I wanted. I’m new to this I love my girls I just really really really want blue eggs as well .

That's really interesting. I have an Easter Egger pullet that hopefully will start laying sometime soon. I will have to check her leg color. My two Easter Egger hens have green legs and lay green eggs.

Yep! It seems silly, but it kind of makes sense if the bird has that specific pigment in their system. And I have to tell you- it's been really accurate for me!

See her legs are like a blackish grey. My EE's have very clearly blue or green tinted legs.

As far as just buying a laying hen... you're not going to have a lot of luck there especially if you are looking for a very specific breed. People who have laying hens likely raised them from chicks or pullets. Rarely are laying hens sold because they're kind of like the whole point of the hobby. Your best bet is to buy chicks or a pullet and just raise them up.

started pullets can be had at most major hatcheries.

Here is a link to two of the hatcheries that will ship chickens close to Point of Lay (POL).

Guaranteed female. Eggs within a few weeks. No chicks to raise or deal with.

Cost of the birds isn't too bad (remember they fed them for 16+ weeks), but shipping is a little more.

Looks like Murray McMurray has some Ameraucana available (blue and green eggs)

But looks like Meyer is out for now, but you could order for a later ship date.

Good Luck.

@Kayla's Lunch where did you copy this from?:

Not true.
