No broody hen this year!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Broodiness comes from within, it's driven by hormones. Age, feed, health of the birds, space in the coop and run, even nesting spots can effect their ability and desire to go broody. Make sure they are in tip top shape, (no internal or external bugs, other health issues) clean out old nesting material from the boxes and replace with new, keep them on a good diet, lots of exercise and hope for the best. Hopefully next spring you get some broodies!

:welcome We are sooo happy to have you hear with us!! :frow

It is very possible that your hens have reached the age where there motherly insticts are not really there anymore. They possibly are not thinking about raising baby chicks. If you want more broody hens, I would get some new chicks this spring and after about a year they should start wanting to go broody. And also it might help to get to get some breeds that are known to go broody - such as Buff Orpington and Silkie chickens - also I have always found that Easter Eggers go broody often and make great mothers!!
Hopefully you get a broody hen!!

Hiya, Cynthen, and welcome to BYC!! :frow

I have no idea why as I have to break my silkies constantly. Maybe someone else knows.

What if you put a bunch of eggs in a nest? Would one maybe sit on them?
You are so funny...I feel the same way...wishing I could have one day of no broodiness.

Welcome to BYC.
I've had broodies who skipped an entire year, then went broody again the next year. I have one who brooded before her 1st birthday and never went broody again until she was almost 6 years old.
Check them over for parasites. Make sure they are eating a good quality feed. If they are well nourished and in good health, I'd say they just weren't feeling the hormonal urge.
I agree...it is all about hormones.
