so with out relizing it i ran out of chicken layer food and will not have $ to buy more till next week what do you suggest as far as human food i can give them to tie them over for a week or so. they free range from 7am to 8pm everyday in back yard and i throw out mixed veggies but they only eat peas and carrots. they get a hand full of wild bird feed in the am. and frozen fruite in afternoon when we get warm suck as charries, strawberries, pinapple. I have also been doing yougart and cheese for calcium. any other suggestions would be appriacted. (oh ya they also get seed breed thrown out some have all kinds of seeds some have cranberry depending on day and what is given away at time.

Good time to clean out the fridge and the pantry. Chickens can eat about anything you can... dry cereal, granola, make any old cornbread, pancake etc mixes, any kind of grain or seeds, barley, oats, wheat, bread, cooked pasta and rice and/or cooked beans and lentils, any greens, fruit or veggies, any dairy products, leftover meat or fish scraps, pretty much all the scraps from cooking. Other livestock or animal feed in small amounts. Pretty much just give them a mix of a little bit of everything. Check out the chicken treat chart in the Learning Center for things not to feed them, but besides things high in sugar and salt, green potato skins and avocados are about all you shouldn't feed them.

Re: free range: it depends on how much acreage, and where you live. In the summer, when bugs and greens are plentiful, perhaps they would be ok, but in a small yard, or in the off season, they won't find enough to eat. If your freezer has any meat products that are past their prime, now would be a good time to cook them up and feed in limited quantities.

What about age limit? My hens are 17 weeks I just need something to tide them over for the night, then i'll have my wife run to the store to get some.
