no chicken pellet diet?

I pay less than $10/bag for layer pellets and it is complete nutrition, nothing else needed, though I do use some supplements for my breeders. My 11 grain scratch costs more than my layer feed, but they get very little of that. Freeranging has its limits. If you live on a farm and they eat feed spilled from other animals, maybe you can get away with not actually giving them chicken feed, but if you live in the suburbs or in the city, there isn't enough to live on and thrive. They may survive, but they won't truly thrive.
