Absolutely go for it. I would design the space with the intention of not being able to let them out of their enclosure. Chickens will desimate the garden. With a pool, I'm sure you spend a lot of time hanging out in the backyard. Chickens poop on everything. Usually right where you want to sit or step in bare feet. Also with small lots, stop them from wandering over the fence and pooping on the neighbor's porch... Don't be "that" neighbor.
The space will comfortably work for 6-8 hens. Build with an open aviary walk in design. Personally, I would skip a traditional four sided roofed coop but a mini pool house would be a hit.
