Just a story...We adopted a 8 yo Jack Russell Terrier in Oct. I've worked with him quite a bit, regarding his chicken behavior. He most always ignores them, but does occasionally look at them thru the run (no free ranging). His job is to keep mice and chipmunks under control. Today was a nice enough day, that the JRT was left outside in the morning (we have 70 acres). At lunch time, I go out to the coop to gather eggs and notice a HUGE pile of white chicken feathers. Of course, the dog starts gobbling up the evidence, as I'm searching around for blood. Not finding any blood or parts, I run to the coop and start counting chickens. All are accounted for and no injuries or missing feathers. I go back to the feather pile and investigate. The feather pile happens to be at the stack of left over building materials. Evidently the dog was able dig under the stacked materials, and found a mouse nest...which happened to be made of chicken feathers the mouse has gathered.
Good thing we have a JRT to take care of the mice.
