We have nine hens, all of them are laying eggs; but recently, one of them has been laying eggs with no shell, just the membrane. We assume it's just one but could possibly be more than one. My husband has begun giving oyster shell along with their food but maybe it's not been long enough yet. Any suggestions of what else might need to be done for her? Also, how much oyster shell should be given? He uses "Home Grown" brand of chicken food and also gives them lots of greens (lettuces, kale, fruit, grapes). They have free range of the backyard during the day so they also get bugs that they peck out of the grass along with the grass.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

could she be getting ready to molt? also, hens who eat chick starter or something like that with less calcium will lay eggs without a shell. I would say give the oyster shells some time too.

we're not sure which hen it is laying the shelless egg, but all of our hens are about 14-15 months old. Thanks for the replies, we'll continue with the oyster shell.
