Hey everyone!

I’m incubating a bunch of Buff Orpington Eggs. I have had 4 hatch and 1 in the process of zipping.

I also have 2 more which don’t seem to be doing anything. I candled them and couldn’t see any internal pips but I did see movement. Do you think they’ll be alright? Should I step in and try and help?

thanks in advance!

Since one is just now unzipping I might wait another day.

If you decide to help do plenty of research ahead of time! It shouldn't be done on an impulse.

@BirdsBeesTrees They’re currently on day 22! I will probably wait an extra day and candle them in the morning to see how they’re getting on. It’s just strange how there’s no internal pip in the air cell - I hope they’re not malpositioned :S

@Sonya9 Yeah, I think I’ll probably wait an extra day as day 22 is still early. I’m just anxious as this is my first hatch with a proper incubator so I don’t want the last two to go wrong! I’ve heard about malpositioned chicks so I’m worrying a bit, haha. I have been reading the assisted hatching guide which has been super helpful! thanks for the advice!

Sounds like you are well prepared! It is just so sad when people post in crisis and start researching AFTER they began opening an egg and everything has gone horribly wrong.

@Sonya9 yeah - it definitely is a scary experience! I just had one of them external pip so waiting was a good idea!! The other one has no movement even when candling - but I’d call that a good success rate as all the others hatched! 😊

I just had a quick look in the incubator and saw one of my black rosecomb eggs had pipped (I had 5 already hatched today so thought it was a dud). Anyway, I picked it up as I saw the membrane wasn’t broken (but the egg shell was?) and tapped it to see if it was alive. I heard nothing and thought to poke a tiny hole through the membrane. Unfortunately it looked like the chick drowned - it pipped below the air cell. :( What do you think caused it? Malposition?

One internal pipped in the evening, however by the morning it was dead and had some weird ooze coming out of the pip. I cracked it open and there wasn’t even an air sac anymore!! I wonder what happened :s
