So, I have a 6 month old hen (green queen Easter egger) who was attacked (we think by an owl) on Sep 15. She was essentially scalped. I rushed her inside cleaned the wound and used surgical glue to close the wounds as best I could. However, being that I am not a veterinarian nor am I a plastic surgeon, I screwed up. The poor girl can half see out of 1 eye, because I pulled the skin too tight and it is partially covered by her lower lid. Her upper lid does not appear to function, but the lower lid closes up over the whole eye, as does the inner eye lid. The other side of her face is worse. I think the opening closest to her eye is supposed to be attached to her beak. I think the pink slit is where her eye opening technically is. But she doesn't appear to have any control over it and it appears to be sealed shut. She has constant drainage out the "eye hole" but it is clear, like tears and is likely whatever drainage would normally go from eye to beak. Periodically, we can see into the hole and can see her eye. It actually appears normal. We also see it move under the skin. She was in isolation for a long time, but has recently been released into general pop (after reacclimation, of course).
So given all of this, does anyone know any way I can "fix" some of this. There are no real chicken vets near me and I have a feelingbthe bill for chicken plastic surgery would be as much as or greater than human, if someone were even willing to do it.
She is generally a happy and loving girl and one of the only 3 laying eggs for me at this time. I don't want to cause her more pain, but feel horrible that I made her life worse while trying to save it. Honestly, even as I glued her together I figured she would be dead by morning. This girl is a fighter and has done really well! Her depth perception is lacking though.
I will be cleaning her "bad eye" up shortly. It gets crusty like this daily.
