Well, not exactly a noob - more like a born again chicken nut. Had a lovely backyard flock more than 25 years ago that I had to re-home when the family moved to Los Angeles. Family's been back home in Washington State for a long time and I've wanted another flock of hens, but I was too busy being mother hen to my own chicks and, later, their babies. My first flock (way, way back) was composed of 6 old blown-out hens I purchased at the Enumclaw auction for $4 and change. 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Rhode Island Red, 1 UFO (unidentified flying object) large breed and 1 UFO Banty. They were the most wonderful pets and although they only gave me an egg every other day or so, many were double-yolkers or Jumbos. Coop was a converted garden shed and they were allowed to free-range in my fenced suburban backyard. Neighbors were bribed with fresh eggs into silence about the odd "escapee."
This is my first experience with raising chicks and I'm learning so much just lurking the forum. My new babies are light Brahmas, beautiful yellow fluff balls that are 1 week old today. Having a blast watching them grow. Absolutely blows me away to see those little babes instinctively knowing how to scratch for their food. Lots of laughs over their antics, too.
Would love to hear from other chicken nuts in my little corner of the world (northwest Washington) and looking forward to making cyber friends with folks far and wide.
