I am wanting a good breed of quail that I can raise in Boston temps which can be cold... In the winter I know during the winter am going to need to raise them inside for the first two weeks or so.. I really don't have room to put them inside that long at a time.
I also am looking for a good place to buy eggs?? if any one knows please tell me I don't have a lot of money to start the project but would love to start raising quails.
Thanks in advance.....

I would suggest coturnix quail. They are a good dual purpose quail. They weigh more and have larger eggs than other quail.

In the winter you can give them a heat lamp. As long as they have a place to warm up, they should be ok in your cold winters.

If your going to go with the coturnix go on craigslist and look on south coast instead of Boston and you will find Wisconsin Bobwhites and Jumbo Brown Coturnix eggs, chicks, and adults.

What ever quail you get you will need an incubator and they will need to be brooded indoors for about five weeks, in the summer you may be able to get away with four weeks if you keep a heat lamp on them at night or have night time temps of 80.
I agree with the others that coturnix will be a better multipurpose quail for you. If you have wire floors you will want to cover them with hay or straw when it starts to get down to freezing as they will lose a lot of heat through their feet, or if you have them or the ground hiding places lined with straw would be a good idea. If it gets into the teens they will need a heat lamp.
Good luck with your quail project!

Cheers,
Jessie

I did decide am going with the Coturnix quail. I do want to keep them outside to raise them there. It gets in the 10 degree here haven't seen it get colder than that on avg. I was going to get a heating light for them.. But good idea on the hay cause i wasn't thinking that I was thinking like news paper.
