My RIR hen is going on 7yrs old, normally very clean. Just recently I noticed that she has a very dirty bottom become lethargic and I just noticed mites. Are mites attracted to dirty bottom? I used some poultry dust. What’s going on here? Eyes are bright and Comb is red.

A general loss of condition result in a dirty bottom. That can be a sign of internal parasites.

Mites are opportunists. When the overall condition runs down, mites build up (unless you have a large infestation in the flock already that passes along).

Aging hens can be less fastidious as arthritis sets in. That can also create dirty appearance which does indicate less preening and bathing which would encourage mite infestation.

I would worm her for internal worms as well as dust her in another 10 days.
