North Florida County Fair--Dirty Birds/Illness Problem HELP!!

Well... I for one do not show birds, or anything for that matter.... AND, no cash prize or pretty ribbons would sway me to leave my animals in harms way. Furthermore, if the contract says that you must leave the birds there all weekend, then I would start a nice petition with all the others in the same situation, and get all the rules changed... as well as the 4-H vet, livestock manager... etc. In other words, "MAKE SOME NOISE" do it quick and forcefully. Change what is obviously wrong to make it better for next year!
Back to my semi-conscious state. Good luck!

This is why I will hardly walk through show barns. I "love" to go see the birds but am petrified I'll take something to my own birds. One of the rare times I had illness over the years WAS soon after a visit to a county fair, so experience has taught me this lesson (even though we showered, changed shoes, etc.)

Heck, I don't even like people who have ANY birds to come near mine.

Crystal1957, Which fair is this???? I want to make sure not to take my birds there in the future.

This is unbelievable that they would knowingly let these conditions exist and do nothing. I believe I would find the highest ranking person in this division of the fair and make an issue of it with them. I don't start at the bottom of the power chain and work up.....I go to the top first because they usually care about the reputation of their organization and will take quick action to direct change.

I don't see how they could withhold your awards even if you removed your birds. And if they did, it might start an ugly newsworthy story that would expose their error and cause a lot of bad publicity. I'm sure they would not want that, right?

i would pull my birds and check them out if you only want ribbon then stay in there. but someone told me about that i would have open the cage n take them home with me

Indeed...Heading to the fair in the morning. Before they open to the public--with my cages. Not asking, just TELLING them I am taking my birds.

The fair is yearly, in Tallahassee, Florida, open to all 50 states. It is called North Florida Fair--check it out on google, look for North Florida Fair 2010. Tallahassee is the state capital of Florida.

And the 4H with all the dirty birds was Gadsden County, Florida. The head of NPIP here in Tallahassee (for the entire state of Florida) approved the birds to stay in the show, along with the vet. Yipes!!!

If they were my birds, I would pull them; however, understand that they have already been exposed to whatever is going through that show barn. Isolate and quarantine when you get them home. Katy is right the only way you can guarantee the safety of your home flock would be to cull these show birds or take them to another location for quarantine. When you bring them home, all the rest of your flock will be exposed. Good luck, this is a tough call.
