I personally think you should get the two, giant cockerels (young roosters) who are in my back yard. You'll never be late for work - they'll get you up in time!! They'll eat anything, however the way they're growing I think you may need stalls instead of a coop....

Hey guys! I'm looking to set up a coop next year. I live in a subdivision and we're allowed up to 6 hens. Does anyone have any advice specific to our northern il weather? Like best hens, best floor for coop and run,etc?

You want cold tolerant breeds and if you want them to lay consistently through the winter you should explore breeds that are good cold weather layers... There are pros and cons to any breed, so your best bet is researching the breeds that appeal to you followed by trial and error...

As for best floor that is personal opinion mostly, I use the deep litter method, and it works for me but other will prefer another method...
