Hi all - I've been lurking a while

1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My son got them for his 5th birthday 6 years ago. He sells the eggs but we all love the hens.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have lost quite a few recently . Had 17 last year and now down to 4 ladies and a rooster. But are hatching as I type and so far 7 chicks with 1 pipping and 14 more eggs.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Cream legbar, maran, bluebelle.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They are so happy in the garden its just nice to have them around.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Not much else! Gardening walking and reading

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Its me, my husband, 11yr old son, a golden retriever, a black cat and the hens. We live on 2 acres and the hens roam free.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

Always come back to this page for help and information and with just hatching chicks now in an incubator for the first time I thought we would have questions!

Hi there! Good questions, and you have a very full life!!

My partner and I bought 3 acres in Nov of 2017 with intentions of becoming more self sufficient as our retirement years are approaching. We cleared about a 3rd of it and put a mobile home on it in May of 2018.

In July of 2018 my neighbor made a deal with me. He'd give me 25 chick's if I'd raise 2 baby turkey's for him. Turned out that all but 5 of the chick's were roosters (I was devastated that I had to give them away), and I grew very attached to the turkey's that I had to return. My 5 hen's are basically mutts, so they fit right in with our rescue dogs. Olive (10 mo old American Bulldog mix), Ernest (10 yr old Catahoula/Ranch retiree), and Gigi (7 yr old Catahoula breeder throw away) Pictures to follow.

We have a very large garden and this year we grew Okra, Tomatoes, Pole Beans, Eggplant, melons, radish's, sweet potatoes, and beets. We have also discovered that fig trees do very well in central FL, and have invested in several varities. Did you know that there are more than 700 varieties?

I found BYC in researching Foul Pox for one of my neighbors and now I troll it daily for as long as time will allow :lau
