Fernley, Nevada
Hi....I noticed that the most recent post is 2009....I am in Fernley, Nevada about 30 miles East of Reno. I am new to chickens, but through this site I've learned so much and just love owning chickens. I am interested in finding out if their are any chicken lovers in Fernley. I know there are chickens in our town, I see them all the time. I have a small flock (6). I have two of each: Goldens, Buff Barred Rocks, and Rhode Island Reds. They are great....just started laying. I researched and planned for owning chickens over well over a year before getting my coops and 10x10x6 enclosure that the coops are inside of. Boy, I would say I'm definitely and Mother Hen. I tried to think of everything while planning and drove my better half crazy with this. He was so sweet although probably thought I had lost my mind. All in all it worked out well, although I wouldn't recommend buying a pre-fab coop. I learned my lesson with that one. We ended up modifying the coops so they turned out comfortable and healthy for the girls. We modified the ventilation....they had hardly no ventilation at all and that's a major problem. also, the roosting was too low so we had to add roosting in the basement for the girls since the roof of the house wasn't high enough or sloped enough. In fact, we plan on modifying the roof soon. The nesting boxes were fine and the poop trays were correctly placed. The run wasn't big enough so we added to the runs......the enclosure is as predator proof as a paranoid chicken lover could get which includes hot wire at the bottom and the top as well as motion sensor lighting around the entire enclosure. So far we haven't had any intruders.....Living in Fernley we do have hawks and coyotes....I haven't seen a coyote since we moved here, but I'm sure they can smell chickens and will show up sometime.

Hopefully there are others out this way......it would be nice to be able to talk to other chicken owners in proximity.
