This hen is one year old. She came in a batch of gold-laced wyandottes. I am wondering if she is any other type of breed, or if she is just a mixed breed perhaps? There is no way that she is all wyandotte because she has a single comb not a rose comb! Any input would be great!

Really?! I had no idea...I've never had a single comb on any of my wyandottes, but I've only raised chickens for 3 years, so there is a lot left for me to learn and see I suppose! Thank You, I have been baffled by that one for awhile now

Welcome :)

I've never seen that in person either, but I stalk the breeder threads and someone on there said that it does happen and that the single comb Roos are more fertile than the Rose comb ones

I would suppose its a LOT more common in hatchery stock seeing as they aren't very particular in their breeding practices.

Very interesting..she is the only hen I have that will sometimes lay me two eggs in a day!

Agree with the other posts.

A single comb is recessive to a rose comb-even in breeding stock you can get a single comb ever now and again. It just depends on what recessive genes your breeding pair has. Most of us that breed for show stock, don't use the single combed birds for breeding. They do make fine layers though!
