hi gang. . thanks in advance and i'll try to keep this short. . . light brahma, 3 years old. . .chicken had a giant crop. . i'm talking over a softball size. . . i didnt think much of it because theyre such big birds to begin with. . . until she started doing this weird neck twitch and every now and then a little fluid would come out of her beak. . so that night (saturday night) we took away their food. . and sure enough. . the next morning her crop hadnt emptied. i've never dealt with sour crop before. . . so anyways, put her in isolation with no food, water w/ probiotics and electrolytes were available to her. i've been massaging. . .she would eat grass. . so i locked her inside of the infirmary. . this morning, she had expelled a lot of muddy feces. . and her crop size was down to say . .a baseball. when i touch her crop now (which i forgot to mention was so big that her feathers in that area are gone) its very gritty. . like the crushed granite. . not hard, pliable. . still baseball sized. . . i offered her plain greek yogurt which she wouldnt touch, and later about a tablespoon of rinsed sauerkraut that we have fermented. . . she ate the kraut. her latest excrement was a large amount of water and what looks like grit. i have not seen much in my search about a gritty or gravely crop. . . it really feels like 1/3 of a cup of gravel in there. . . hoping for more expulsion tomorrow. Any tips for me? i'm hoping its not pendulum crop and that this will continue to pass through her. . . I know i technically shouldnt have given her the kraut unless her crop was empty . . i'm worried that this gravel isnt going to pass through .. . how long can she go with no food? (im not sure how much water she is drinking because she keeps spilling it. . but i would imagine some just by inspection of what she had last passed. should I grab some monistat from walgreens and give her 1/6 of a tablet? or continue to wait to see if we can resolve it this way? if she sucessfully passes all of this grit. . . how long will she need to be on a modified/soft diet?

also. . .when massaging her before isolation i did try to get her to expel via the mouth, unsuccessfully. . . after her own progress from softball to baseball i'd prefer to steer clear of this technique.

Has there been any update on your bird? I'm sorry to say I don't have much advice to offer as you have attempted much of what I would have if I were in your shoes.

Yes, thanks for asking....at about the 9th day of monistat she expelled what I figure was grass from 11 days prior... Lots of massage and I fashioned her a bra....she's still in isolation and I'm about to give her her 4th small meal of the day. She has lost a lot of weight. Hopefully the crop reset works and we don't end up with pendulous crop....fingers crossed....thanks for asking!
