Not laying yet

Hello,

I have a small flock of six hens. The three older ones (only a month older) are laying and have pretty good production. The three younger ones are 23 weeks and they have red faces but have not yet laid. It has been in the 80's and 90's and very humid. I have seen that the three older ones are very protective of the food. I try to put out multiple feeders to make sure the younger ones are able to get enough feed. Is there any reason why the younger ones have started to lay yet?

How many nesting boxes do you have? Also do you give them oyster shells? I have a Buff Brahma that didn't lay until 26 weeks. One day I scooped her up (she didn't like it) and I sat her on my lap on the ground right next to where my EE was getting ready to lay. I held her down and stroked her back until she was so relaxed her eyes closed. The next day she knew where to find her zen and she started laying! I am new to this too-- but it's a learn as you go process for sure!! Good luck!!!

Thank you! We have three nesting boxes, though the older three only use one. And yes I put oyster shells out for them.

Different breeds can mature at different rates. And the time of year also plays a big part in how soon a pullet reaches maturity. Pullets that reach maturity in the fall can take longer to start laying.
