Hi All, I have 3 hens. A 6 year old who things she is the boss and a mum and daughter of about 2 and 4 years old. Everyone happily came out of the pen following the boss until about 2 weeks ago. One of them is still moulting (no-one is laying by the way) but they don't want to exit the pen at all - so much for free range ! They used to come out and forage around all over the place but now won't come out without being pushed out. Granted the days are shorter but it has only started in the last 2 weeks. None of them are sitting in the laying box so I doubt any of them are broody - any idea...Would they not be liking the amount of ducks that have been around recently (gone now) or the pukekos - although they don't seem to have been bothered by them before.. Any suggestions welcome.

Any number of predators could have been seen. A fat cat or hungry dog. Maybe a hawk or fox.
As long as they aren’t suddenly sick, it’s likely fear. They will get over it eventually.
If you have time, grab a chair and treats, and sit outside a while. Offer treats, and start singing or reading to them.

I agree, it sounds like something spooked them! I think the suggestion of sitting outside with treats and just talking to them is great! I've had to do it with my girls after a brush with a brave hawk.

I thought they must be scared of something, can't be my cat its been here for 2 years now, could be a hawk as there are 2 close by. But its a nice day here so I am off with my chair and bacon bits...thanks for your help

Good luck! It might take a couple of days for them to resume their "normal" routine but if you pop out when you can they'll eventually get back to the busy business of being chickens!
