I do have a question...... My hubby and I are thinking about getting a new incubator off of ebay, What is everyones opinion on these 2 baters
Little Giant
Hovabator
do all new baters have a thermostat?

everyone says to wait til day 10 to candle. you probably not going to see much at day 3. i know it is hard but wait at least a few more days and check again. as to incubators... i have a hovabator still air. hubby is going to add a fan and then i think it will work well. right now it is tough to keep temps stable. good luck

Day 3 is way too early to be candling, won't see much, if anything at all. The following link has 3 thread references about candling and what the eggs look like at certain stages of development.

LG incubators have a bad reputation for most, though there are some folks who have success with theirs. Their thermostat adjustment knob is very sensitive. I have one that I use for the hatching only. I added the fan to it and modified the knob to make it a little easier to adjust the temps.

I don't hatch in great quantity, so I use a Hovabator genesis 1588 for incubating. I like it. It comes preset, but it can be adjusted if needed. I've never had to adjust it though.

Generally I candle on days 7 and 18 only. I feel that the less I handle the eggs, the better. And wash my hands really well before handling them.

Just wait a little longer, happy hatching!

One week will be on wed so i will look again then and see. But this time i wont get all my hopes up. lol.

Styrofoam incubators are the hardest to use. They don't work well, the thermometers in them aren't accurate, they don't hold the right temp./humidity, the turners stink, etc.

especially for a beginner hatcher, I highly DO NOT recommend Styrofoam incubators such as the hovabator. LG incubators are awful, in my opinion. they're the worst. I recommend Brinsea incubators. If you're doing a small hatch, I recommend the brinsea mini advanced incubator. Very easy. the mini eco incubator is also pretty good, but you have to turn the eggs yourself and adjusting the temperature is extremely hard. I'd suck it up and pay the $50 extra bucks for the mini advanced. Brinsea incubators tend to work well in my experience.

I'd use a really good candler and candle at day 8-10. Day 3 you won't see much. maybe some veins, but only with close observation. at day 8, candle them all, and you can surley tell an infertile, clear egg from a developing fertile one.

What incubator are you using currently? If it's Styrofoam, there's your problem. Beginner egg mommy + Styrofoam = not always the most successful hatch. But hey, anything can happen! give the eggs another week, and you'll be surprised!

always remember to keep the humidity at the right place, and the temperature at 99.5 for fan-assisted incubators and 100.5 for still-air. [err, i think it's 100,5 for still air, i haven't really used those before..] (:

I use a styrofoam still air Little Giant, and temps hold good. The way I see it, the hen will get up to eat and stretch her legs and the such. I see many people using home made incubators, and having good hatch rates with up to 5 degree swing, a couple degrees either way. The eggs will hold the heat some, so I would not think small fluctuation would hurt much. But, on the same token, this is my first try at hatching; and I still have one week until hatch. I am thinking I may of had a few quitters. Good luck.

its a styrofoam one fan assisted temps have been at around 100 humidity has been around 34-36. I had about 6 hours of off time due to my cat turning off the power bar where temp went to 60ish and humidity went to 50. This is hard to do , incubating, thought that it would be a bit easyer. Karma kick my a$$ there.

Your only a few days in give it some time.We all where nervous wrecks our first time incubating.....
