In the Brooder
Figured i've been mostly stalking the forums since around last year, and this year made an account to see if I got anything fun out of my mixed unlabeled TSC bin, but nah. Still, chickens are chickens and I love them for ALL their uses!
I have the small flock of young 6 (3 white leghorns, 2 EE, 1 RIR) that I have right now (started out 7, but... well, part of the reason I have and get chicks particularly from TSC is they are good feed for other pets(snakes)... sorry guys)
I also have a RIR and Easter Egger that lays for me, had 2 EE but dog got one on accident and couldn't save her
But, ever since getting my first egg (and blue one at that!) my addiction shot up through the roof. >.>
Sooo, aside from what I currently have at home, I now have a very very mixed bag coming at the end of the month of 16 more chicks... 4 more EEs, 3 buff orphington pullets, 1 jersey giant roo, 1 silver laced polish roo that I added for my friends son's birthday gift to be kept and raised here, 3 speckled sussex, 2 Salmon Favorelles, and 2 Hatchery Choice Rares (HOPING for a orpington or wyandotte from their rare list, husband wants a Brahma. We'll see I guess. The suspense and figuring out will be our favorite part!)
So... yea, greatly increased my numbers >.> and building up a larger coop this weekend to an 8x10 with a large run and also be able to let them free roam when I'm out back so that my german sheperd doesn't decide that he can play with the chickens like he does other dogs or our cats (he's 13 months, still rambuctous). Also hoping that the roo will help curb that issue too, along with working Kilo with the chickens to learn to ignore them. Busy life.
So, thats my chicken story right now. Oh, and the friend whose son I got the polish for? Well, now her DAUGHTER wants a chicken too... so their plan is to go to the local homestead shop that has chick days this week, and pick out 1-2 chicks themselves from what they'll have available which are:
Easter Egger
Buff Orpington
Black Copper Marans
Blue Cochins
White Silkies
Buff Silkies
So... yup. I'm the crazy chicken lady now. I'm hoping to be able to, in the end, have birds for meat and for eggs, as well as some funky mixed breeds and hatch out chicks to sustain my 3 snakes as well, since chickens have less fat on them than rats, and unless I can get out to some of the local shows, I'm paying a lot more overall for the rats than I would be for feed for chicks. :x
Aside from that, I was a 3D animator and rigging specialist, sometimes concept artist, and also part time barista for the insurance, up until I had my son back in August. Now I'm home with him and the zoo, while husband works as a bartender, and sell home made oils, lotions, bath bombs, and soon homemade soaps as well. And occassional wood carvings and the sort.
I think that covers most of my chicken-related and slight bit about me section.... so, nice to meet you all!
