I had to help two chicks hatch last night, this afternoon I noticed one of them wasn't walking right. After a full check I noticed this in it's butt.

i thought it was poop so I was told to try pulling it out but it's really dry and I don't want to hurt it, I was also worried it might be after birth or something. Help?

Sorry for poor quality pics, poor bugga wouldn't stop moving.

That's not pasty butt, that is their equivalent of an umbilical cord... leave it alone, or yes you could end up hurting it... the vent of a chick is much higher up on its backside, just under the tail nub...

Agreed! That's not pasty butt or even a butt! And even if it were, you need not be pulling on any thing. You can pull their down feathers out and even their insides. If it were a butt issue, you'd use warm water to loosen dry stool. But as previously mentioned,it's the equivalent to an umbilical cord. It's ok. Good to be aware and concerned. If you're not sure it's always good to ask first. The peeps here are very knowledgeable! God Bless.

Thanks, I was told to but I thought to ask BYC first! It looked like poop but I didn't want to do anything just in case. New to having chicks so it's all scary to me
