Most of my girls have started laying and for the most part it’s all going well. Only two eggs have been soft and we’ve already have one double yoke 😱. None of the girls have acted sick or had odd or concerning behavior. However one hen was behaving as though she was getting ready to lay and was out in the middle of the yard. But what came out was not an egg. It was this

All that comes up when I try to search this is coccidiosis. I’m not convinced that’s what this chicken has going on however. What the heck is this? A partially formed egg? Is this normal for new layers? Should I be concerned?

That looks to be a shell-less weird egg. It almost has a tail on it. I would make sure that the pullets are taking some crushed oyster shell in a separate container from their feed. Do you feed them layer feed and limit any treats? Has their been any stress or respiratory infection in the flock recently. Hopefully, they are just experiencing some glitches in their egg laying. A few of mine had soft shell eggs or shell-less ones, and a few double yolkers. What feed are you using and what breeds are your pullets?

We have Americaunas and ISA Browns. This was from one of the Americaunas. They get layer feed and oyster shell. Any treats they get are meal worms or sometimes a little cottage cheese because we have a ton of it and no one likes it (they get that maybe once a week or every 2 weeks). No illness or stressors have been present.

Agreed, it does seem to look like a yolk with a tail along with Albumen.
I would mark it up as a new layer glitch, but monitor that particular pullet for several days to see if she's still doing o.k.
Here's a good video about how eggs are formed and laid - very interesting!
