I have a 2 year old Sapphire Gem hen. Last spring/summer she started to pull off her feathers in the vent area then progressed
to the breast area. I took her to my Vet who has avian experience. He looked her over and thought she may have mites,
but couldn't see any crawling around in the vent area. I did some research and it looks like she may have De-pluming
mites. She looks just like the pictures of chickens with the issue I saw on the internet. I talked to my Vet again and he gave
me some Ivomec 50 ml liquid to be given in two doses, 10 to 14 days apart. I did that and it doesn't seem to have helped.
My chicken has some scabs on her breast area from picking on herself. The Vet said if they go away, the meds worked. Well,
they are still there. I asked him if we could repeat the treatment, but he is reluctant.
I also have two more of this breed and they look like they have the same issue, but to a lesser degree. I really don't know
what to do. I feel bad for my girl. I have 4 other hens, two Easter Eggers and two Silver Laced Wyandots, and they are
fine. I hope someone on this Forum might be able to give me some suggestions based on their experience. I would appreciate
that very much.
