The scenario is as follows: I have two RIR 3 week old chicks--Bernice and Henrietta. When I first got them, Henrietta was slightly bigger than Bernice. The sizes, however, have switched, noticeably so. Bernice has more heft to her. I'm not sure why this is the case. As I have observed them and they're doing the same thing, together. Could Henrietta be ill?

If she's behaving normally (eating, drinking, pooing, running around), then she's likely just fine. Some chickens are simply larger than others (even among the same breed). One of my Orp chicks was a runt and was only about half the size of the others when fully grown. The other option is that "Bernice" may be "Bernie" and is simply growing faster.

I also had one in my last batch of chicks, a Welsumer, that was tiny and failed to grow much at all for about a month. At one point, she was half the size of the others.

But by 9 weeks, she caught up and is now bigger than some of the others. She's on the ball and doesn't take any guff from others. Hope your little gal is fine and grows.
