NPIP Certification

We purchased some eggs and chicks from a local small breeder last summer and she strongly suggested we get NPIP certified. We can't figure out how often we would have to be inspected and if the fee is annual or one time. Can anyone give us advice on if this is worth the cost and trouble to get. We only sell a few chickens a year but my husband might want to try and do more when we retire in a few years. Thank you for any insight!

I'm not sure if its varies state to state but I'm in Kentucky. You contact the dept of Agr and they come out once a year and swab the mouth of up to 30 birds depending on the size of your flock and they prick the underside of one wing to get a drop of blood and mix it with another chemical and if it turns to a sandy texture your birds dont pass if it stays liquid you pass!!! It's FREE every year its a great plus for you to have if you intend to sell birds but it's up to you only a few birds a year isnt a big deal unless theyre high dollar birds.. Although its FREE!

Thank you so much for the input! My husband was ok paying once but thought it was going to get a little expensive if we had to pay every year. The other breeder gave us an application and said she might want to get some chicks from us in a year or so but couldn't unless we got certified. I will go ahead and fill it out and send it in.

It is my understanding that the cost can vary from free to expensive, depending on what state you live in.

I live in Texas. The breeder told me it was $30. The problem is, we didn't ask if it was annual or one time. My husband went to their website to try and determine that but couldn't find it. I guess I just need to call them. In the past we've only had a few chickens, around 15 or so. But he has started incubating eggs and is going berserk on me. He's started hatching chicks every weekend now, which is fun, but I'm starting to get overrun with them. I think we have about 50 chicks right now and I can't seem to get him to stop. I guess I need to go ahead and get certified and try and sell some chicks. He has discovered he LOVES hatching baby chicks.
