Nurse needs Help with feathered patient! Would Resp Illness be on just one side (see photo)? How sho

Have you spoken with the breeder? She may have some insight into what's going on. The antibiotic that your feed store employee recommended, lincomycin/spectinomycin is for chicks up to 7 days old. Tylan, Gallimycin (erythromycin), and oxytetracycline are good for mycoplasma, and can treat coryza as well, but sulfa drugs like Di-Methox or sulfadimethoxine are maybe a little better. Here's a link about the LS50: http://www.qcsupply.com/media/pdf/540925_Label.pdf

I just got a text from the breeder, she recommended Vet Rx. Just read onLine it is made with combo of essential oils, thinking about saving another trip to the feed store and making a homemade version. I will see what other meds feed store carries, didn't seem to have much selection. Their water container is 1 quart do I added 1/4 tsp of lincomycin. Directions that came with the powder were pathetic, but at the store they told me 1 tsp per gallon for bantams.

Vet RX is a 100 year old remedy of essential oils, but it won't cure MG or coryza. Antibiotics don't cure them either since they are chronic diseases, but symptoms will be reduced with a proper antibiotic. Many antibiotics are available online from Jefferspet.com and other online stores by Googling the name of the medicine. http://www.jefferspet.com/antibiotics-and-sulfas/camid/LIV/cc/3502/c2c/ln/

UPDATE: Thanks for the info & resources, tomorrow is day 5 of Lincomycin, went with this antibiotic as it was what I could get my hands on the quickest. My girls are still alive

I looked up the essential oils used in Vet Rx and did some reading on using EO’s on chickens and decided to go with Eucalyptus (2 drops diluted in 5cc almond oil) then I dipped Q tips in oil. Every evening once the girls went into the coop I first cleaned their icky nostrils with a wet cotton balls (saturated then excess squeezed out) then followed with Eucalyptus Qtip rolled around outer perimeter of nostrils. I really think it helped because before the EO I could hear the sickest Grace breathing like a musical horn, right after the essential oil it lessened by 90%! I also rubbed some of the left over oil into a panel of wood on the inside of their coop. Seems like the lethargy and drainage has lessened and everyone’s appears to be on the upswing and getting better.
EXCEPT Lilly (as depicted in photos) she has been energetic and eating like a pig as usual but her left sided swelling around her cheek has not improved. Today as I was wiping her nostrils I noticed it looked like something odd was protruding out of the corner of her beak, so I opened it and looked inside… behold I saw what looked like a pocket/pouch inside her left cheek and it was full of something. So I got an irrigation syringe full of water and some Qtips and was able to dislodge & pull out a small white firm clump. I hope this is the solution once empty it will seal close and heal. Oh, so far these chickens have been high maintenance, I thought you just put some feed & water out and collected eggs

I am glad to hear they are doing better. Hopefully the lump will start to recede on Lilly. You did right by removing the gunk inside. Keep a check on that.
Maybe they will reward you with lots of eggs (after they are fully well) to pay for the "egg-cellent" care you have given them!

The pocket inside the cheek was most likely solidified pus. It is good that you removed it. You may want to purchase some sulfadimethoxine (brand names Di-Methox, Albon, and Sulfamed G) for any future outbreaks of coryza. It is available online--Jefferspet.com has many of those meds in powder or liquid form. Of course, you may want to check one chicken tested to know for sure whether you have coryza or a bad strain of mycoplasma. Great to hear that they are doing better. Please keep a closed flock--none in, none out because respiratory disease is contagious making carriers of the whole flock.

Yes, I think your right about the pus. It had the consistency of boiled egg and I often give her that as a treat, but since cleaning it out I checked again yesterday and there was more of the same gunk! I didn't realize pus could solidify that much. And the pocket inside her beak/cheek..I'm guessing it's a sinus drainage area that's being expanded and clogged by the pus/drainage? I just can't believe she's still producing her daily egg and so active, feisty, hungry with all this going on. Luckly the temperatures shot up this week, it's been beautiful warm 75-79 degrees, I think that's helping too! Yes, closed flock it is. I don't want anymore chickens, these 4 girls are running me ragged!

I think the worst is over, no more sniffles, sneezes, nose drainage, everyone is perky and happy . Started putting probiotics in their daily water, poo's are returning to normal. BUT the left side of Lilly's face is still puffy and about every other day I have to go in with a Qtip and pull out a small white clump of crud from the side of her beak. I was reading some threads about WET POX and CANKER, and I'm leaning towards Canker. Later today I'm going to try and get a photo and probably start a new thread with it. I can't get over how smart she is, she's just an awesome chicken and I want to get this cleared up for her. She was also full of lice, so we bather her ( lathered her up with Dawn foaming dish soap, then blow dry) and sprayed with Manna Pro -all natural skin protector (do not care for the toxic Sevin dust) such a big difference!!!! Treating the other chickens and coop with the Manna Pro, as well even though they appear to be infested.
