Hello all. just joined as I have been reading here alot anyway.
I live just outside of Crawfordsville , IN.
I have been planning on getting some chickens since moving into our new house last December.
I will be raising birds for eggs and meat.
Last weekend I bought 5 straight-run White Faced Balck Spanish Bantams.
they are ugly birds as adults, and I know their egg production isn't the best, nor are they typicly raised for meat, but the price was right, $1.00 each.
plan is to order 25 cornish game hens in the next month or two, and possibly another breed for laying hens, thinking probably Rhode Island Reds
I am sorta new to raising birds, but as a kid, I helped my grandpa with his quite a bit, up through my teens.
I still don't know if I can legally have chickens where I live, but I have asked all of my imediate neighbors and they all said they don't care. I will build the coop and run so that any areas facing neighbors will be solid so they don't "have" to see them, and I won't keep any roosters so the neighbors don't have to hear them.
I also am raising rabbits for meat, so hopefully this winter I will have the freezers stocked
