Hello from NW Oregon!

About a month ago my hubby and I started talking about how delicious the fresh eggs were from the gal our daughter was farm-sitting for, which led to the discussion of possibly keeping chickens in our small back yard. After reading and studying (thanks in great part to this site!) we decided that "we could do chickens."

Saturday, we're going to pick out 4 cute little future egg-laying chicks from our local farm store. I'm so excited! Our brooder is already set up in the garage and our coop is being delivered tomorrow!

This is almost better than Christmas! lol

I'm looking forward to participating and getting to know everyone!

. Good Luck with your chicks! Are you buying sexed pullets or straight run?

Thanks, Kevin!

We're getting sexed chicks. We can have up to 6 chickens here in our town, but no roosters. Hopefully the odds will be in our favor and we'll get all hens. I know there's a small chance of a rooster, though.

Thanks, 4-H!

My daughter did horse 4-H a few years ago for her senior year in high school. Ahhh, good times, good times. This year was the first year I really took a good look at all the beautiful birds raised by the 4-H kids at our local county fair. Those kids really knew their stuff and were a great source of info. It was nice to actually see the birds in person, too!

What breeds are you planning on getting? If you went with sex links it would be a guaranteed pullet.

Yes, this is true. However, since we have 3 in our family, the deal is that each person gets to pick a breed and I get to pick the 4th (because guess who'll be doing most of the grunt work? lol).

The breeds we're considering (and that will be available to choose from) are Americaunas (or so they say, but they're probably Easter Eggers), Black Australorps, Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, and my daughter really has her heart set on a Rhode Island Red. There are more breeds available, but from what we've read we seem to gravitate to these breeds.

Thanks, Kamil!

We lived in Southeast Asia for several years when my dad was stationed in the Philippines. It was a unique experience, to say the least! We got to see lots of amazing things and one day I'd like to return for a visit.
