My wife and I started with chickens last year about this time. We have 17 acres and looking forward to another big Garden this year. I'm a truck driver, welder / fabricator, and 3d printer guy.

We own a John Deere 1050 with front end loader and it's a great workhorse.

We built a winter coop from 2" insulation foam board befroe we knew they'd eat it. DUH! So we coverd the inside with fabric and a vinyl flooring glued to the outside walls and around the openings.

2 wyndettes, 1 Iso Browm and one Rohde Island Red. We get 4 eggs a day mostly...

During the build....

I need some updated pictures. Yes the top is open on both ends with a "hood" on the outside to prevent winds from whipping through. It is painted with gray barn paint. It is butted up against the 15X20 foot fenced in run. We do move the whole thing in the green months, every week. We have 2' rebar "nailed" into the ground at an angle to keep everything in place. It gets crazy windy here. we're 11 miles form the south east corner of Lake Ontario with little in elevation change to slow the winds.

We did add a heat lamp when we were getting the -50*F winds. Only in there for two nights. We have a temperature monitor in there and can see the coop temps in the house. accu-rite brand. It stayed at around 16*F in the worst of the storm. We also have a Blink camera from BJ's wholesale so we can watch what they're doing in the coop from in the house. It's cool because we got to know what bird is going to lay at what time and what box. One of the wyandettes started laying on the floor for some reason.

There is a large clear plastic panel on the entire length of the roof. We bought windows from an old RV to make this more summer friendly. But I think we are going to build a smaller chicken tractor using the red summer coop since we only have 4 birds now. We lost a few to a raccoon and a couple from an illness. We are happy with 4.

This was a trial so it never really got finished completely. I know the great foam is Ugly. but here are updated pictures I just took. They were free ranging in between the two coops the other day!! Happy girls!!
