Oakland, CA Newbie--Need Chicks!

Hi all--I'm looking to purchase 3 chicks for egg laying, but am having a hard time finding places to buy them from. One of the spots had horrible reviews when it came to animal welfare/cleanliness, another spot's website was down. Any help would be appreciated! (Also, I have two boys, one 6 and one 2, so recommendations for good egg layers and good personalities are welcome!) Thanks in advance!

It's nice to see people from the Bay Area raising chickens!!!

You can check CraigsList for someone selling chicks.
There are hatcheries you can buy from (they ship).
Also, "chick days" will be coming up the first week or so in March; most of your local feed stores will have baby chicks for sale (there's usually a 6-chick minimum).
Look at the BAY AREA forum to see if there is anyone near you who has chicks for sale.

Good egg layers are the Black Australorps, Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds (or Red Sexlinks).
The Black Australorps will be the friendliest.

Thanks!! I just found someone on craigslist who has 15 chicks and only wants to keep 5. I'll have to check on the breed. Thanks for the recommendations! We are so excited!
