I have a persistent broody Cochin. I keep breaking her and she keeps trying again after a week or two. I am considering letting her raise 2-3 chicks from a hatchery, but I am concerned about the weather as I am in Michigan. If I let her raise chicks, will they feather out in time to not freeze or will I need to heat the coop? If I heat the coop, can I just use it on really cold nights so I don't have to heat it all winter? At what temperature do I need to be concerned with chicks?
If I just let her sit, at what point or temperature will she give up. She has sat off and on ALL summer. I let her raise day old chicks last summer and she accepted them easily and was a very attentive mom. She also does not need eggs and will sit on an empty nest. I have considered offering to raise chicks for others since she seems to enjoy and excel at parenting. :)
