My rooster is a two year old BO that seems to be in perfect health. Every day or two the back of his comb turns really dark ( almost black). Then it goes back to red. Anyone know why?
If that black could be a dark purple-ish he may have a problem with circulation, a heart problem,.......it is concerning although good to hear he seems to be acting healthy. It is the whole comb or the tips of the comb?
Our roosters' combs frequently are frostbitten in cold weather, which results in a purplish color on the edges of their combs and wattles. When they are wounded on their combs and wattles they will also develop small black scabs.
I don't know exactly what could be happening with yours, but what is the weather like where you are? If it is cold, then that could easily be frostbite.
