Hi, the other day i walked into the chickens and found a small pure white egg in a nest box, now this one was smooth and perfectly normal, although ive no clue who laid it!?, ive a mix of sussex, rir, leghorns, seabright and minorcas.

Then two days after another egg laid in a different place it was like sandpaper, next day found another rough egg, then i had two smooth normal eggs in the days after. ive read that these eggs are sometimes a first layer or can also be associated with lack of water etc but my hens have access at all times to water so im taking it to be a first layer.

I have 8 young pullets mixture of breeds, and two older hens i toook in last year, its so difficult to know if its been my own wee chickies or the older ones so ive fingers crossed that the rough egg is a sign of first layers!

I would check the pelvic distance on your younger pullets, then if more than one is appropriate for laying, smather her vent in food coloring. You can color code the hens you think it could be and the egg will come out the color of the hen that laid it.

Now that does sound like a good idea.! I was thinking going to have to get cctv in with them, to think how simpler a solution a bit of colouring will be
