Hi there, recently my hen has been in weird moods and pooping oddly. My hen who's 3 1/2 years old was acting a little off like she could be sick last week, I noticed that she was eating things like roots, shavings, and various Earth particles in the dirt consistently. I didn't think much of it until I looked into it yesterday when I watched her eat a small feather. I've never seen her do this before and read that it could be a protein deficiency therefore I gave her some BOSS today when I came home to hopefully help. Early in the day, my mom gave our hen leftover oatmeal with yogurt, cinnamon, and blueberries which I noticed my hen ate a portion of when I came home. She was up on one of the sticks we have in the coop for her to jump on and I noticed an alarming type of poop she didn't have yesterday. Yesterday and days before, her poop had been solid, big and had a greenish tint which I do recognize as a problem sometimes but I'm not sure what that would be. Whereas today, her poop was a splat like diarrhea yet she acted more lively and happy to see me then she did yesterday. I uploaded two images below if anyone has any idea what's going on I'd really appreciate any feedback. I'd just like to add she had ACV and a clove of garlic in her water all last week so I don't think any bacteria would have risen already but I'm not sure.

Thanks,
3Chickenfriends

P.S. She hasn't been eating her layer food as much as a normal bird (even when I mash it up) and hasn't gone to bed with a full crop in a very long time. Any suggestions would definitely be appreciated.

The green poop could be from the blueberries, but the yelllow poop is what is more concerning. It could be from egg yolk peritonitis or a possible E.coli infection. I would keep an eye on her poops, and instead of giving more people food, give her chicken feed plus water. Some hens love wet chicken feed, and you can use a few probiotics or a tsp of plain yogurt daily. Make sure it contains live cultures.

Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly I really appreciate your feedback. Tomorrow I will give her then wet food with some yogurts. Is egg yolk peritonitis possible if she hasn’t laid in about a month or two? She’s a poor layer in the winter plus she just finished a small molt.

It may take some time to figure out what exactly the problem is. Egg yolk peritonitis and internal laying are common in older hens, and it can be common for them to not lay regularly. Other signs can be runny poops, lack of appetite, loss of weight, not wanting to walk much or preferring to sit or lie down, and lethargy.

You’re right, I’m being pretty hasty with this despite the fact I’m not very concerned just yet. I will update you tomorrow with her poop and behaviors thanks again.
