I was told this was a partridge chick. He(?) Has been unique since he was a day old little peeper. He was chipmunk with darker stripes than all the rest and he was twice their size. The breeder had partridge, jubilee, mottled and chocolate orps. Is he a mottled mix or jubilee? I see a hint of the partridge pattern in the brown markings... is it possible he is a mottled partridge? I know he won't be worth breeding but I'm curious... if he happens to be a she I may keep it for table eggs just because it's unique.

That stippling really does look partridge-y. And it's obviously mottled. I saw a picture of accidental true partridge mottled on here once and it looked different--it's apparently very difficult to get; the chances are very low. However, it could be a mottled with some genes that are common to partridge, maybe. I'm no expert, though! Maybe it IS an odd jubilee.

Quotes I found from a thread on true mottled partridge: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/223726/black-mottled-x-partridge-color-genetics-question

Hey all, i know this is an old thread, but i was doing some searching for pictures of mottled partridge and couldnt find any, but did find this thread.

Mottled partridge are gorgeous little things, i have just hatched one from a Partridge male and female mating, both carrying the mottling gene, here is the little girl with her sister, who is a plain partridge.

It is even more complicated than stated above. There is a not too tight linkage between the extended black/partridge gene and the mottled gene. This gives an even smaller chance on mottled Partridge.

just found a great thread on this, according to some genetics buffs, the percentages should be

51.69% black
23.31% Partridge
23.31% Black mottled

and only 1.69% Partridge mottled.

So it seems if the linkages are similar for me, that i was extremely lucky to get a mottled partridge out of only two eggs hatched.

thanks! I have never heard of partridge mottled I just guessed as he had both patterns over a black base. Does it look like a cockrel to you? I'm thinking it's a boy. Might be a pretty yard bird to just let run around lol
